About Sugarloaf Water Association

Water service at Sugarloaf began in 1955 with two drilled wells serving the developing ski area.

As the Sugarloaf community grew, its water system expanded with it. Sugarloaf Water Association was formed in 1992 as a private, nonprofit organization to meet the growing drinking-water and fire-protection needs of the community.

Today, SWA operates a complex mountain water system serving residences, condominiums, lodging properties, restaurants, businesses, and resort facilities throughout the Sugarloaf service area.

Our Water Sources

Sugarloaf Water Association uses both groundwater and surface-water sources.

Much of our drinking water is supplied by deep bedrock wells located on Sugarloaf Mountain. During periods of higher demand, groundwater is supplemented with water from the South Branch Carrabassett River.

Surface water is treated at SWA's West Mountain filtration facility before entering the distribution system.

Our Water System

SWA operates and maintains:

Drinking-water wells
Water-treatment facilities
Storage reservoirs
Pumping and booster stations
Pressure-reducing facilities
Water mains
Fire hydrants
Water-quality monitoring systems
Supervisory control and monitoring equipment

The mountain environment, seasonal changes in demand, elevation differences, and continued development make reliable operation of the system particularly important.

SWA continually maintains and improves this infrastructure to provide safe drinking water, dependable service, and fire protection.

Our Commitment

Providing safe drinking water is Sugarloaf Water Association's primary responsibility.

We are committed to protecting our water sources, maintaining our infrastructure, meeting drinking-water requirements, and planning for the future needs of the Sugarloaf community.
